GILGIT: A high profile terrorist on Thursday blew himself up, killing his wife and a daughter as security agencies raided his hideout in the remote Darel valley of Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B).
Two army soldiers also died in the incident that came early Thursday after security forces acting on a tip off laid siege to a house belonging to a local commander Hazrat Noor in Darel valley.
“The terrorist Hazrat Noor blew himself up to avoid arrest,” a security official said on Thursday.
“Besides his wife and daughter, two soldiers were also killed in the incident,” the official said.
According to the official, the terrorist also opened fire on the forces from his hideout before detonating himself.
Hazrat Noor is said to be a local commander of Taliban faction in Diamer who was allegedly involved in attacks on foreign tourists, their investigators and passengers on Karakoram Highway in the recent years.
“Security forces got information from intelligence agency that Noor was hiding in a house in Smagal area of Darel valley,” said another security official, adding the raid triggered sharp reaction from inside that house where Noor was hiding.
According to the official, a suicidal jacket and arms have also been recovered from the house.
Talking to Outpost Usman Ahmad, deputy commissioner of Diamer district, confirmed casualties and said action was intelligence-based.
“The operation was successful and resulted in the killing of Hazrat Noor.”
Meanwhile, security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to arrest the remaining suspects.
The incident comes two days after Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif confirmed death sentences of 13 ‘hardcore militants’, including one involved in the killing foreign tourists in Nanga Parbat. Irfan Ullah Khudayar was condemned to death by a military court for the attack on foreign climbers.
The execution will be the first for an act of terrorism in G-B.
