GILGIT: Residents of Gilgit-Baltistan [G-B] on Sunday received the real taste of winters as valleys in the mountainous region received first snowfall of the winters.
“This is amazing, simply amazing to be in the midst of snow,” says Raza Mohammad, a resident of Ghanche district where more than four inches of snowfall recorded during the past two days.
“Usually the cold is extreme in the winters but it has added colour to the life this time around,” said Mohammad about the snow that whitened the surface in many parts of the region blocking traffic on highways leading to high altitude areas in Astore, Baltistan and Hunza Gojal valleys.
While mercury also plunged more than 10 degree Celsius in many parts of the region, adding to difficulties, the youngsters from Gilgit visited Hunza to enjoy the snowfall that came down after an interval of four years.
Gilgit city was the exception though it received snow on the peaks.
“This is lovely scene all around and we enjoyed a lot,” said Khalid Hussain, a resident of Gilgit who visited Gojal on Sunday.
A couple of traffic accidents have also been reported in the region due to slippery surface but without any loss to life.
According to Gulam Nabi, a resident of Yaseen Ghizer, the temperature has dropped to -10 degree and snowfall continues to lash the valley.
According to Pakistan metereological department, more snowfall on peaks and cold weather in the region will persist in the coming days.
