GILGIT: A stakeholder Consultation on Draft Management Plan for Qurumber National Park, District Ghizer was organized by WWF-Pakistan in Gilgit.
The purpose of the Consultation was to share the 3rd draft Management Plan with stakeholders valuable for their inputs, comments and further suggestions to improve the Pan, read a press release issued on Monday.
Sajjad Haider, Secretary Forest, Wildlife and Environment was the Chief Guest of the session. He appreciated the efforts of WWF-Pakistan for developing the Management Plan for Qurumber National Park. He assured that the department will provide full support to WWF and communities during implementation.
Earlier, Dr. Babar Khan, Regional Head WWF-Pakistan welcomed the participants and briefed about the Background of developing the plan. Mr. Babar Khan told that WWF has facilitated the process of writing a comprehensive Management Plan for Qurumber National Park, Ghizer, in consultation with GBFWED, relevant stakeholders and Park communities. This was the 3rd consultation with the communities and stakeholders.
He told since 1997 WWF-Pakistan has been involved in Qurumbar Valley for integrated conservation and development, Saving Wetlands Sky High; participatory management of high altitude wetlands in Pakistan, Pakistan Wetlands Programme’s (PWP) and other conservation education projects for sustainable uses of natural resources.
On February 02, 2011 the celebration of The World Wetlands Day at Gahkuch, under the project titled, Saving Wetlands Sky High Programme of WWF, the communities of Qurumbar unanimously presented the same resolution to the Secretary, Forest Wildlife & Environment Department, Gilgit-Baltistan the Chief Guest of the day. After completing the process with required documentation, the case has been presented to the Secretary and he issued notification of Qurumbar National Park, on August 02, 2011. After notification of the park, WWF-Pakistan (Gilgit-Baltistan) started efforts to gain some funding for development of the management plan.
WWF-Pakistan will incorporate the inputs, comments and suggestions of the stakeholders and will present to Park and Wildlife department to present in the Wildlife Management Board for approval.
The Plan was developed by Mr. Shahid Rasheed Awan, Additional Secretary Technical, Forest, Wildlife & Fisheries Department and Dr. Raja Muhammad Omer, Deputy Secretary Planning, Forest, Wildlife & Fisheries Department, Government of Punjab in consultation with park communities, forest, park & wildlife department and other stakeholder and partners of at Gilgit & Ghizer district.
