GILGIT: Students and teachers on Saturday organised a protest rally, demanding punishment to those who attacked and injured a professor.
Dr. Shah Nawaz, Chairman of the Department of Agriculture and Food Technology at Karakoram International University [KIU] on Friday was attacked with batons and iron rods by a group of students.
In his first information report [FIR] which was registered with police station, Nawaz nominated students belonging to Imamia students organization [ISO] for the attack that left him with head and neck injuries.
“This is sheer terrorism and we want severe punishment to those involved,” said a student addressing the rally.
“If government is sincere with education and the university, it should immediately strike off the students and register cases against them under anti-terrorism act,” said another student.
The injured professor, who is under treatment in City hospital Gilgit, told media the attackers were masked who hit on his head with the iron rods and sticks. He said the attack came a day after a religious event was held by the KIU administration. The university administration had decided to organize the event instead of letting a particular group to do, he added.
According to an official, a delegation from the ISO met Dr Nawaz in his office to show reservations over the event that took a day earlier. “They were not happy with the content of the event and therefore wanted it to be reorganized. This somehow culminated into violence,” said the official.
Police have booked 9 students under anti terrorism act and three of them have also been arrested, a police official said.
The KIU management has started an investigation.
In 2012, a clash of two student groups over the same issue had left two dead including a policeman, resulting in spread of violence in the whole region in the days followed.
