GILGIT: Terrorists have planned attacks on passengers and government officials on Karakoram Highway [KKH] and in Gilgit - Baltistan [G-B] before Eid ul Azha, interior ministry has warned.
The threat has come days before G-B residents make thier way back to home to celebrate Eid with thier families, leading to increased traffic on KKH - the major highway connecting G-B with rest of the country.
“A plan to this effect has been prepared by a banned terrorist outfit belonging to Kohistan district of Khyber - Pakhtunkhwa,” stated the letter written by the national counter terrorism authority this week and was quoted by a regional Urdu daily. It has addressed home department of G-B, asking it to take appropriate measures to foil the attacks.
The ministry has further warned that the terrorists have arranged uniform and arms and have been able to enter Gilgit in order to execute the plan.
“These terrorist may hit government officials or passengers to avenge killing of Mufti Amanullah,” it added.
Meanwhile police and other law enforcement agencies have stepped up security in the town, increasing vigilance and search of vehicles and passengers on the entry points.
KKH has seen increased violence in the recent past. At least three major attacks took place on KKH during 2011 and 2012 in which more than 50 passengers were attacked and killed in Kohistan and Diamer district.
