GILGIT: Rowdy scenes marred the proceedings of Gilgit – Baltistan legislative assembly on Thursday after a lawmaker from Ghizer valley Nawaz Khan Naji passed a ‘derogatory remark’ against residents of Baltistan.
Jahan Balti, waha galti, [Wherever the Baltis are, fault is there] was what words uttered by Naji after Ghanche district lawmaker Ghulam Hussain reminded deputy speaker he can’t change a ruling he already passed.
This all happened after a lawmaker from Ghizer district Fida Khan tabled a resolution asking the government to form a separate district including valleys of Yaseen and Gupis.
The deputy speaker Jafarullah, who was chairing the session in the absence of speaker Fida Nashad, said the matter should be left with the chief minister to decide instead of voting or debate in the house.
The lawyers from Ghizer valley including the Fida Khan insisted on allowing a debate and voting on the issue. Upon this the deputy speaker allowed voting and lawmakers sitting in treasury benches and opposition starting raising the hands.
When this was happening Ghulam Hussain reminded speaker of his earlier ruling in which he had talked of referring the issue to chief minister for decision.
This interruption from Hussain irked the lawmakers from Ghizer and Naji said in a loud voice “Jahan Balti, waha galti.”
Taking it as an insult to their region and the people, the lawmakers from Baltistan also raised on their seats and started passing abuses. Raja Jehanzeb, a PTI lawmaker from Ghizer, jumped at his seat ‘to teach a lesson’ to Baltis in the house.
The speaker adjourned the house for an indefinite period.
Earlier chief minister Hafeezur Rahman, replying to a question, said more than 200 project worth 2 billion started by the previous government in Gilgit town are incomplete. He said they have been categorized them as “sick projects.”
