GILGIT - The PML-N formed its cabinet in Gilgit Baltistan the other day with induction of a lady minister from Diamer District, known for its backwardness and its tribal values, something very pleasant for the residents who were flabbergasted to see a lady from the area confidently appeared on the dice to take oath of her office.
Sobia Jabeen Mokadam looked determined in the simple but impressive ceremony of oath-taking while in the office she expressed her resolve to focus on women’s issues in the area. “I have a lot of challenges as the living standard of womenfolk has to be upgraded,” she told The Nation, adding; “We have to work for the betterment of women who deserve special attention of the government.” Sobia in her early 30s is the youngest cabinet member, but what is more important to note she is the first lady minister from Diamer district, known for social taboos and its conservative norms.
The young lady has been given portfolio of Women Development and Youth Affairs and culture.
She expressed that all-out efforts would be made to provide employment opportunities to women of the area.
The minister originally hailing from Jehlum District of Punjab has been wedded to Diamer District.
“I have seen and observed closely that there is much to do for the improvement of living standard of the people who are totally ignored in past,” she stated. She prioritised education at top and said educational facilities would be provided to girls at their doorsteps in the remote parts of the region. “I will explore a lot of opportunities so that women could come forward and play their part for the development of the society,” she added. The minister said all-out efforts will be made to boost up rich culture of the area, adding youth of the region were kept ignored by former governments but PML-N will work for their development.
“I have plans for the youth of area as to how provide them opportunities to exhibit their talent,” she added.
The young minister had confidence in achieving her targets and remarked that things are hard but not impossible as where there is a will there is a way. Sobia further said that it would look odd that a woman from Diamer district has become minister but it is good omen that someone has courage to take lead for a positive change. -- The Nation
