GILGIT: While PTI chief Imran Khan accuses PML-N of rigging the June 8 elections for Gilgit – Baltistan legislative assembly, his lone ranger in the 33 member assembly, Raja Jehanzeb on Thursday negated party chief’s claims and congratulated the government “for holding free and fair elections in the region.”
“I congratulate the winning members and also the government for holding free and fair elections across the region,” said Jehanzeb, the lone lawmaker of PTI who won from Ghizer valley.
Jehanzeb’s comments came during G-B assembly session in which Fida Mohammad Nashad and Jafar ullah were elected unopposed speaker and deputy of the house respectively.
Jehanzeb was also the unanimous candidate from opposition parties for the slot of speaker but withdrew in favour of PML-N Nashad, paving way for his unopposed election.
Similarly the MWM lawmaker Kacho Imtiaz was running for deputy speaker but he too withdrew in favour of PML-N Jafar Ullah.
The former speaker Wazir Baig vacated his seat and left the house soon after announcing Nashad as speaker of assembly.
As the new lawmakers given time to speak, Nawaz Khan Naji hoped the speaker would act not as a government mouthpiece as did the former speaker during the previous government.
Naji, who is one of the three lawmakers from the previous assembly, termed the June 8 polls free and fair and hoped the new government would work for the welfare of people.
He criticized former government of PPP, in which he was an opposition member, for encourage corruption in the region. “The present government is expected to not repeat the mistakes of previous government.”
The chief minister-hopeful, Hafeezur Rahman, said his government’s top priority would be elimination of corruption and restore merit in the region. “We will work for the betterment of the reigon and for that matter we would take the opposition into confidence.”
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is expected to visit Gilgit on Friday to formally announce leader of the house. The PM is also expected to address the assembly session after announcing the leader of the house.
