GILGIT: Six of the nine absconders involved in an attack on police in Dudoshal valley of Gilgit – Baltistan [G-B] have surrendered, police said on Wednesday.
The surrender was reportedly made possible by representatives of a local Jirga that convinced the perpetrators to give in.
“The jirga has assured arrest of the three remaining men very in a day or two,” a police said on Wednesday.
On Sunday, at least two officials, Riaz Khan and Amanullah, were injured when a police team, led by Diamer Superintendent Police (SP) Rauf Qaisarani, was ambushed in Dudoshal area, Diamer district. The police had started action against the absconders who were reportedly present in the area and police had received information about their presence.
The miscreants had been involved in tribal feuds and were wanted by the police for various murder cases. A local court had already issued sentences against them. However, the absconders had repeatedly escaped from the police and had gone into hiding.
“The exit and entry roads have been closed to ensure the perpetrators don’t flee the area,” the official told Outpost.
According to insiders, the police have also decided to raze the houses of the accused attacked police to teach them a lesson.
Superintendent police (SP) Rauf Qaisarani, the operation has been launched to purge the valley of the criminals who challenged the rule of law. “police will remain in the valley till arrest of last criminal,” Qaisarani told media.
He said a police check post will be set up permanently in Joot area of Dudoshal valley to check the activities of the criminals.
“If Jirga fails to produce the remaining criminals within the stipulated time, police will start action against them.”
