GILGIT: Just hours before end of Gilgit – Baltistan government term, federal government on Tuesday summoned chief minister Mehdi Shah and opposition leader Janbaz Khan to have their say over appointment on a caretaker chief minister.
“A caretaker CM is likely within the next 24 hours,” said a senior official in the G-B government whose five-year term ended on Wednesday.
The list contained names which have been forwarded to prime minister including Zafar Iqbal, a renowned banker and another person from Diamer, the official told Outpost.
They [Mehdi Shah and opposition leader Janbaz Khan] have left for Islamabad on the invitation from federal government to take part in the consultation for an interim chief minister.
The constitution impasse will end if someone is appointed as caretaker CM, he added.
According to official, necessary amendments have been inserted in the G-B governance order 2009 to allow for a caretaker setup. “This has been done and now a caretaker setup will come into existence,” said the official.
The Empowerment and Self Governance Order 2009, under which G-B government was formed in 2009, didn’t have provision for an interim setup.
The regional government however has inserted the amendments, constituting a committee that comprises federal minister for G-B and Kashmir Affairs besides CM and opposition leader to nominate a "consensus candidate" as CM for the region.
“There are three names over which the committee members are pondering. If they fail to evolve a consensus over a candidate, the prime minister will use his discretionary powers and appoint someone as caretaker CM,” he said.
