GILGIT: One student and two policemen injured on Monday after two student groups clashed at a college in Gilgit.
The students had gathered in the Government Degree College to mark a religious day when the clash erupted.
“This was an unfortunate incident in which three people have received stone injuries,” said senior superintendent police [SSP] Ali Zia on Monday.
“What is our priority now is to keep the peaceful atmosphere of the city intact,” Zia told Outpost.
Police avoided making any arrests immediately following the clash that jeopardized the illusive peace of Gilgit. “It would be done after talking to responsible persons from the groups,” said another policeman responsible for maintaining law in the city.
Following clash, in which police fired in the air to disperse the students, police tightened security in the city to prevent spread of violence.
According to a student, the clash was sectarian motivated as two rival sectarian groups had a disagreement over organizing an event in the college. The college management over the week tried to forge a consensus but failed due to intransigent behavior of some of the students from the groups.
“One group had planned to organize an event in the college while another group was against holding such events inside the premises,” said a student about the cause of dissent that led to violence.
